In this session, we will highlight Manual S procedures for cold climate heat pumps and discuss additional important tradeoffs, that Manual S is silent on, that should be considered when selecting equipment, such as electricity consumption, house of aux heat, and low load cycling.

Eric Fitz is the Co-Founder of Amply Energy, a software company helping HVAC professionals design heat pump systems faster, more accurately, and with less hassle. Amply’s platform offers real-time Manual J load calculations, 3D floorplans, and beautiful proposals that help contractors close more jobs and save valuable time.

Before Amply, Eric led electrification retrofits across New England, designing HVAC, weatherization, solar, hot water, and EV charging upgrades for dozens of homes. He serves on ACCA’s Manual J technical committee and has a deeply worn copy of Manual J8 v2.5, has a passion for building science, and 20+ years of experience designing hardware and software products at General Electric, Guidehouse, and Advanced Energy United. Eric holds a masters in Mechanical Engineering and is Design for Six Sigma certified.
