Outdoor Temperature limiting your ability to commission a heat pump? Many technicians rely on heating-mode operation to charge a heat pump—but that only provides a rough estimate. The final refrigerant charge must always be verified in cooling mode to achieve true peak performance. This session dispels common myths, explains why cooling-mode charging is non-negotiable, and shows how it ensures system efficiency, reliability, and occupant comfort.

We’ll reference manufacturer guidelines and ACCA standards to demonstrate that verifying the charge in cooling mode is the industry-standard approach. Gustimating the line length and charge still requires verification.

Attendees will leave with practical options and the confidence to accurately commission heat pumps every time.

Ben Chouinard

Ben Chouinard has been serving the HVAC industry since November of 1996. Over the course of nearly three decades, he has owned and operated several businesses, blending entrepreneurial leadership with a deep technical background. He is a licensed HVAC contractor in the State of Ohio and holds multiple industry certifications from respected organizations including BPI, NATE, ESCO, and measureQuick.

In addition to running businesses, Ben dedicated nine years to teaching at a local Career Tech Center, where he instructed both adult learners and high school students. He considers this chapter of his career among his proudest professional achievements—helping hundreds of students gain the skills and confidence to build successful HVAC careers of their own.

Ben’s expertise has extended far beyond the classroom. He has consulted on a wide range of projects, traveled the country speaking and presenting, and has been featured as a speaker at national ACCA events. Today, he serves as Vice President of Unified Comfort Systems, where he leads with a philosophy rooted in high performance, education, and innovation.

At his core, Ben is passionate about advancing the HVAC trade, bridging the gap between technical mastery and real-world application, and equipping the next generation of technicians with the tools to succeed.
